Betty Everett (November 23, 1939 – August 19, 2001) was an American soul singer and pianist, best known for her biggest hit single, the million-selling "Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)", and her duet "Let It Be Me" with Jerry Butler, in which Jerry sings "without your sweet love, Betty, what would life be?". Everett began playing the piano and singing gospel music in church at the age of nine. She moved to Chicago in 1957 to pursue a career in secular music.

These gibberish words are heard every time the line, "If you wanna know if he loves you. Everett recorded for Vee Jay Records, a Motown competitor. The backup vocals were provided by a local female group from Chicago called the Opals. Everett was reluctant to record this song at first and was urged by Calvin Carter (her producer) to do so. She felt that the song would flop (and probably thought it was silly).

The quirkiest features of "The Shoop Shoop Song," though, are the clattering xylophones, which take the lead in the instrumental break with what sound like deliberate off-key notes, as if to mimic the foolish way lovers swoon as they're succumbing to passion. The brief burst of cha-cha horns at the end of the break is just another neat tic on a most creative and enjoyable record, which made the Top Ten in 1964.
