Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is the second album by New York City-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro, released in 1968. Nyro premiered some of the songs that were to appear on the album at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The song "Luckie" was derived from an earlier composition Nyro had played at her audition for Verve Records in 1966. Before she signed to Columbia Records, Verve had already planned to release the album, under the title Soul Picnic.
Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It's not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: "Sweet Blindness" (covered by the 5th Dimension), "Stoned Soul Picnic" (also covered by the 5th Dimension), and "Eli's Comin'" (done by Three Dog Night). It's not even just because those three songs are so outstanding
Laura Nyro’s stunning second album contains some of her best-known songs, later covered by other artists. Eli’s Comin’ -a 1969 hit for Three Dog Night-opens with spooky organ and intimate crooning and then explodes into ebullient soul pop fueled by whooping brass and Nyro’s sprightly piano. The 5th Dimension took Sweet Blindness and Stoned Soul Picnic up, up, and away, but Nyro’s original versions are a revelation, driven by sashaying rhythms, splashing tambourine, pealing bah-bah-bahs, sensual lyrics, and her joyously untethered vocals. When this album was released inside the jacket was included a beautiful poster of Laura that was scented with her perfume!
And her arrangement of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession blew Three Dogs Night right out the window. Raw emotions right there on vinyl for me to hear. When this album came out around 1969ish, I was a little kid in the Bronx and her music was known and the big hits were Eli's Coming and Stone Soul Picnic (though there are several other big ones). When I listen to this album now, I feel a sense of profound sadness and I don't know why this album evokes this feeling in me. It might partially be due to the fact that she died so young (49) but it's also something about her voice that is so haunting and beautiful. Listening to it brings me back to a time and place in my own life, like a sense memory
