The album’s still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the iceman in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits Hey Western Union Man and Never Give You Up – but the whole album’s great, and like most of Jerry’s LPs, it’s got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits . The Ice Man Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. He collaborated on many of his successful recordings with the Philadelphia-based songwriting team, Gamble and Huff. With Motown, in 1976 and 1977, Butler produced and co-produced (with Paul David Wilson) two albums: . Suite For The Single Girl and . It All Comes Out In My Song. Tony Orlando and Dawn revived "He Will Break Your Heart" in 1975, with a new title, "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)", and it was more successful than Butler's original, going to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop. Most recently, blues-rock duo The Black Keys covered "Never Give You Up" on their 2010 album, Brothers. Commissioner Jerry 'Iceman' Butler currently resides in Chicago with his wife, Annette, has two sons, Randy and Tony, and a grandson.
The Ice Man Cometh, Jerry Butler's most successful LP, was the first full-album work from the production team Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. It marks an excellent collaboration, the first time R&B production techniques reached a level of maturity and elegance capable of fully complementing one of the smoothest vocalists in soul history. The Top Ten singles "Hey, Western Union Man" and "Only the Strong Survive" weren't just popular radio hits, but great performances displaying how far the R&B/soul crowd had progressed from the novelty-laden '50s.
