Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (English: /tʃaɪˈkɒfski/ chy-KOF-skee; Russian: Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский, tr. Pyótr Ilʹyích Chaykóvskiy, IPA: (listen); 7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893) was a Russian composer of the romantic period, whose works are among the most popular music in the classical repertoire
"Symphony No. 4" by Tchaikovsky) - Tchaikovsky fourth is an amazing work, written at a remarkable time in Tchaikovsky's life. He was 37 years old, he was teaching at the Moscow Conservatory. He had just written Swan Lake, one of his great ballets. She was a great music lover, and a great lover of Tchaikovsky's music, and she decided to give him a monthly stipend. This lasted for 14 years. Tchaikovsky was able to quit teaching and devote himself to music, and then he wrote the Fourth Symphony and dedicated it to von Meck. The extraordinary thing is that the two of them never met. They only corresponded but because of that correspondence, of some 500 letters, we really have a feeling for what Tchaikovsky was thinking at every moment.
Opus/Catalogue NumberOp. No. O. 8, TH 28. I-Catalogue NumberI-Cat. Also arranged for piano 4-hands by Tchaikovsky and Aleksandra Hubert, 1885. Symphonies by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. N. in G minor, O. 3 (1866–68, re. 874), "Winter Dreams". in C minor, O. 7 (1872, re. 879–80), "Little Russian".
Tchaikovsky's greatest symphony and, possibly, his greatest work. The 'Pathétique' is one of the defining sounds of the romantic period, but the story behind it is just as intriguing. Tchaikovsky was more than satisfied with this four-movement symphony – but, as was so often and so cruelly the case, the critical reception it received was decidedly muted. Described by some as his farewell to life, in reality we shall never know exactly what inspired the work. What we can be sure of, though, is that it lives on as one of the composer’s most adored creations.
