Neu! is the debut album by German krautrock band Neu!. It was recorded in December 1971 at Studios, Hamburg, Germany, mixed at Star-Musik Studio, Hamburg, Germany, and released in 1972 by Brain Records. It was reissued by Grönland on 29 May 2001 and then licensed to Astralwerks for US distribution. This was members Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger's first recording together after they left Kraftwerk in 1971.

Comes in mini LP replica with obi-strip, insert of notes in japanese & badge. Album originally released in 1973. Recorded during four nights in the middle of January 1973. Mixed during three nights at the beginning of February 1973 in Studios, Hamburg, Germany.

While the basic Neu! sound was not an issue, how to augment it was. As both a guitarist and a composer, Rother had already begun moving in the direction he would end up in with Moebius and Rodelius in Harmonia, and on his later solo recordings: a more unified, melodic, airy, and soaring sound that was full of light and yearning. Dinger, on the other hand, was looking for more anarchy, more chaos, and rock & roll dynamics.

Neu! 2 is an album that is often dismissed, mostly because of what was on side 2 of the original vinyl release. It's pretty much mandatory to parrot the story that Neu! ran out of money before finishing the album, so they decided to record their single at different speeds to fill the second half. While this is true up to a point - they really did blow most of their recording budget on the first half of the album - it's a mistake to dismiss the second half of the album entirely.

Neu! was a German band formed in Düsseldorf in 1971 by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother following their departure from Kraftwerk. The group's albums were produced by Conny Plank, who has been regarded as the group's "hidden member". They released three albums in their initial incarnation-Neu! (1972), Neu! 2 (1973), and Neu! 75 (1975)-before disbanding in 1975. They briefly reunited in the mid-1980s.

Notes

Recorded in January 1973. Mixed in February 1973 in Windrose-Dumont-Time Studios, Hamburg, Germany. This info is retrieved from the official original release.

This unofficial version was put out on CD before it became officially available again and was mastered from vinyl.
According to Klaus Dingers website this was put out by a label called "Germanofon" (notorious for also bootlegging early Kraftwerk and rare LA Düsseldorf for example), although there is no reference on this release to that label name. But the numerical code of this release suggests it was indeed put out by "Germanofon", supposedly from Luxembourg.

The spines credit this as "Neu 2" only.
