Whether or not you are familiar with Godstopper, there is a certain something you will notice when you listen to their music. Mixed in with the literally crushing sludge ridden riffs, and dissonant noise rock, there is a definite catchiness that permeates every song. That aside, there is really no way to pigeon hole a release like this, even if you really wanted to. I say the words "sludge" and "noise rock" but there is no doubt that Godstopper doesn't really care at all about these conventions

Their album "What Matters" is full of brilliant catchy hooks, melody and heavy sludge riffs. What Matters is full of similar catchy hooks, riffs and melody and the vocals remind me Jeremy Chatelain at parts. It’s just that Godstopper puts all of this through a huge blender of sludge, reminiscent of bands like Melvins, Torche and Today Is the Day, somehow creating their own little pigeonhole. Maybe I should just call this poppy sludge, with a huge influence of post-hardcore and noise.

What Matters, their new album, was released Sept. 25, and it follows last year’s Empty Crawlspace tape (streaming here) and a couple of disturbing videos (see here and here) that mirrored the underlying core of violence that seems never to be distant in the double-guitar four-piece’s approach  . As always, I hope you enjoy it, and for more Godstopper, check out their Bandcamp or Tumblr. Kind of a wild weekend, otherwise I probably would’ve posted this on Friday as per usual.
