Redirected from The Imagined Village (album)). The Imagined Village is a folk musical project founded by Simon Emmerson of the Afro Celt Sound System. It is intended to produce modern folk music that represents modern multiculturalism in the United Kingdom and as such, features musicians from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The name of the project comes from the 1993 book The Imagined Village by Georgina Boyes.
The Imagined Village. Imagined Village's Eliza Carthy featured on the amazing BBC new music initiative video broadcast simultaneously last night (Tuesday, October 8th) on BBC One, Two, Three, Four and Radio 1, 2, 4, 6 and 5 Live performing the Beach Boys track God Only Knows alongside Steve Wonder, Kylie Minogue, Pharrell Williams, Emeli Sande, Elton John, Lorde, Chris Martin, Brian May, One Direction
The Imagined Village is an English folk musical project founded by Simon Emmerson (of the Afro Celt Sound System) in 2004.
The result is a quantum leap beyond the first Imagined Village album, refurbishing the mostly traditional folk material in a variety of potent new arrangements, but now fronted by the band's core trio of singers (Martin Carthy, Chris Woods, and Eliza Carthy) rather than an endless series of guest vocalists
The Imagined Village is being hyped as "the most ambitious re-invention of the English folk tradition since Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief. Those are bold words indeed, and it would take a lot to live up to them, especially since Fairport didn't deliberately set out to re-invent the tradition - they simply adapted folk songs to their style. This album draws on a number of talents - Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Paul Weller, Afro Celt Sound System leader Simon Emmerson and Sheila Chandra, and a number of others. But the point about traditions is that they evolve
As well as explaining some of the problems they had to fight through to make the album, some of which demonstrated remarkable solidarity, it also set the scene for what is probably their most remarkable release to date in which the band, although maybe not intentionally, have broken new ground together
