Yumi Yoshimura and Ami Onuki, the savvy entrepreneurs behind the Japanese girl pop duo Puffy AmiYumi, return with Spike, their fourth full-length collection of new material and their first under a shiny new moniker. The artists, formerly known only as Puffy, were legally blindsided and robbed of their six-year-old stage name by Sean "Puffy" Combs - aka Puff Daddy, aka P-Diddy - who apparently didn't think the world was big enough for two Puffys.

Puffy Amiyumi! My second fave Japanese artists after Shiina Ringo. In that case, make room for Puffy AmiYumi and Spike, an eclectic mix of fifteen danceable, ultra-fun pop songs. Boogie Woogie No. 5" is their ska song, complete with horns, though not as brassy as Save Ferris. There's a bit of Go-Go's/Bangles influence here too. "Sui Sui" not to be confused with "Su-i Su-i", is the track that made me think of Shonen Knife. I hope this duo records at least one full length english album but if not, I'm contented to listening to them sing in Japan.
