Franz Koglmann: trumpet, fluegelhorn Mario Arcari: english horn, oboe Attila Pasztor: cello. G(ood)luck marks the new chamber trio of Viennese composer and flugelhorn and trumpet player Franz Koglmann, featuring English horn and oboe player Mario Arcari (who collaborated with him before on About Yesterdays Ezzthetics, (hat art, 1988) and classical cellist Attila Pasztor. Typical to Koglmann art, this trio also succeeds to blend playfully eclectic European musical and non-musical influences into the American form of jazz. The title of the album is a wordplay on n the name of German opera composer from the eighteenth-century Christoph Willibald Gluck (who penned significant portion of his work in Vienna, where he also died).

This album captures that vague feeling so well, so stark, so reflective, yet at the same time so warm and human. Guitarist Aram Bajakian was inspired to create this album after watching an Armenian movie The Color of Pomegranates. Feeling a connection with the film, he constructed this evocative soundtrack layering on acoustic and electric guitars. Relying on long repetitive classical motifs and thoughtful legato lines, the music is impossible not to float in and savor.

Franz Koglmann personifies Viennese cool. His shaved pate caps a reserved expression; the cor-ners of his mouth turn downward just short of a frown; black, thick-rimmed glasses frame quietly intense eyes. His is a countenance shaped not so much by the wear of time, but by the gravity of ideas. Though Koglmann’s erudite compositions have a New York tinge on the resulting album, Venus in Transit, Koglmann’s fourth CD for Between the Lines (the Frankfurt-based label for which he also serves as artistic director), the arch European sensibility he has refined since the early ’70s is far from obscured.
