Starlicker: Double Demon. This has partly to do with rhythm: two percussionists playing repeated patterns (as often occurs here) makes for a solid foundation.

Mazurek leads, composes for and performs with the critically acclaimed Exploding Star Orchestra, Chicago Underground, Smarcho Paulo Underground, and Sound Is Quintet. Herndon, of the post rock collective Tortoise, creates waves of rhythm and maintains an abstract pulse uniquely his own.

Starlicker is a trio composed of cornet player Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quartet and Exploding Star Orchestra, among others), vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz (also of Exploding Star Orchestra), and drummer John Herndon (Tortoise). The music these three men produce is jazz with a powerful rhythmic drive; Herdon's drumming throughout the disc is pummeling and constant, setting up a sturdy floor upon which Adasiewicz dances as Mazurek floats in the air.

What Double Demon does boast is a fully realized sound, one that relies on punch along with finesse. In other words, yeah, Mazurek has done it again.

Double Demon is as much about DIY indie-rock as it is about jazz. Mazurek recruited Herndon from the now-famous band Tortoise-an indie-rock band that's more about jazz and minimalism than rock-to supply a boost to the trio's sound. Herndon's playing is more Keith Moon than it is Paul Motian, as is the more percussive Adasiewicz-in his case, more Moon than Milt Jackson; his own trio CD, Sun Rooms (Delmark, 2010), a stellar showcase of the vibraphonist's composing and dynamic playing.
