In 1954, David joined Charles in his band as the baritone saxophone player (although he is more famous as a tenor saxophone and flute player) and began a twelve year gig with Charles. In November of 1958, Newman released his first album, Ray Charles-Presenting David "Fathead" Newman (1959). The album features many collaborations between Newman and Charles. David "Fathead" Newman (b. February 24, 1933) met Ray Charles (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) at a gig in the early 1950s.
Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader.
