The Tale of the Tape is a rock album by Billy Squier that was released in May 1980. It was his first solo album, following two albums with the band Piper. The disc spent three months on Billboard's album chart, setting Squier's career in motion. Several of its tracks were popular on AOR (Album Oriented Rock) radio. Although no songs from the album reached the charts, the song "The Big Beat" has been notably sampled by hip hop artists, including Run-D.

FIRST ALBUM John Fogerty: Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968), The Blue Ridge Rangers (1973) ZZ Top: ZZ Top's First Album (1971). Creedence were a great singles band from the get-go; it took a couple tries before they got the hand of making albums that were singular statements. As such, the band’s self-titled debut sounds tentative, and the standout cuts were covers: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ I Put a Spell on You and Dale Hawkins’ Susie Q. After the band broke up, Fogerty recorded a solo album under the name the Blue Ridge Rangers, playing all the instruments himself

Tape of the tape is much like Don't Say No but not as rocking. It has rocking moments. The Big Beat, Rich Kid and You should be high love. Songs like Calley oh and Who's your boyfriend are great catchy pop tunes. Squier first solo album should've had more hits but he did great on all his albums even without the hits that avoided him after MTV killed it with the Rock me tonight video. The song was and is still great! MTV ruined many a carrer but Squier still has die hard fans. Tale of the Tape was early proof of Billy Squiers tremendous talents. Squier may very well be the greatest singer, songwriter, musician, of the rock, hard rock genre ever. If you are a rock afficienado then this album will not disaapoint.
