Soon Over Babaluma is the sixth studio album by the rock music group Can. This is the band's first album without a lead vocalist who does not play an instrument, following the departure of Damo Suzuki in 1973 during which he married his German girlfriend. The vocals are provided by guitarist Michael Karoli and keyboardist Irmin Schmidt.

Sparse and intense, Soon Over Babaluma sees the band carrying on with vocals from Schmidt and guitarist Michael Karoli and highlighting the latter's frenetic guitar work. The five tracks on the album range in length from 5'44" to 11'12" and most display the typical Can sound, although there is more of an emphasis on bouncy rhythms, and brighter textures on the first three tracks. Specifically, there is a bossa nova in there and come to think of, Splash has almost an east coast (hot) jazz feel to it - only in the loosest sense of the style however. Jaki is an excellent drummer and he does a fantastic job with both styles - in fact his propulsive style really drives this entire album along.

Yeah, I was not expecting the ambient tone of 'Can' to come out this early on in their discography. There's very much a theme going on here, but I just can't pinpoint it. Ocean?

As such the album provides a bridge between Damo’s last gasp Future Days and the following Landed where the new style vocals are delivered with more confidence.

Musically, if things are a touch less intense on Babaluma, the sense of a band perfectly living in each other's musical pocket and able to react on a dime hasn't changed at all. "Chain Reaction," the longest track on the album, shows that the combination of lengthy jam and slight relaxation actually can go together rather well
