Carl Craig was one of the second wave of producers to hail from the home of techno, Detroit. Throughout his twenty year career he has always been an innovator, taking the techno sound and fusing it with elements of jazz and soul, in the process altering the course of electronic music forever. He continues to be as inspirational and creative as ever in 2008, with his brand new album ‘Sessions’ released on K7! at the end of February. He celebrates the launch of this album with a set in our main room. Carl Craig has always been known as an incredible DJ, a selector who approaches even a DJ set as if creating a whole new tune from scratch, so expect something special.

Busted Trees (Carl Craig 'Sessions' Remix). Like A Child (Carl Craig Remix). Poor People Must Work (Carl Craig Remix). Help Myself (Reconstructed By Carl Craig). Under any ordinary circumstances I would have tossed away any mixed album which is constructed only around tracks and/or remixes courtesy of one single artist. But, these are not ordinary circumstances, and we are not talking about any given artist here, but about Detroit's most soulful son, Carl Craig.

Compiling each Carl Craig remix would be a several-disc box set undertaking. The pool from which to draw is wide and deep, from Nexus 21's 1989 track "(Still) Life Keeps Moving" through Junior Boys' Grammy-nominated "Like a Child. Hopefully just the first way of addressing this large stockpile of varied tracks, Sessions is a two-disc set mixed by Craig that focuses primarily on his remixes (of tracks by others as well as himself) while interspersing a few original mixes of his productions.

Surely this entry is in the wrong place? Also the tracklisting is the one of a digital release, not of a cd release.

wow! One of the best LPs from Carl Craig, every track is unique, some versions are only available on this LP. Top release

Under any ordinary circumstances I would have tossed away any mixed album which is constructed only around tracks and/or remixes courtesy of one single artist. But, these are not ordinary circumstances, and we are not talking about any given artist here, but about Detroit's most soulful son, Carl Craig. Now, this what I want my after party mix session to sound like! Subtle, might seem to soft at first, while revealing many intricate layers of synth stabs, soulful vocals, piano sequences, finger snaps, great drive and loveable groove (I just cannot resist tapping my feet throughout while listening to this). The mixes never really take off to unprecedented heights, but float with ease and punch you right in the center of your heart without resorting to massive climaxes or furious beats. You could look down on mr. Craig and hold grudges for placing only his own tracks on the menu, but I reckon your scepticism will be over by the time the first disc's up. Calling this a "best of" would be a misunderstanding, but rest assured Carl pulls some of his most moving and complex pieces ever out of his DJ case, throws in some lesser known numbers and drops about two hours and fifteen minutes of deep, soulful and (call it that if you wanna) emotional tracks in a mix which can make you move your feet as well as tickle your cerebrum. The mixing might not be exemplary, though flow wise, it is impeccable, tracks flow in and out of each other with ease, and with some filter tricks, Carl shows that he is as skilled behind decks as he is talented in the studio. Genre wise, a vast territory is covered, from deep house through to thumping tech house and back to some proper head nodding Detroit techno. Just check the first ten minutes of the second disc, and if that doesn't mesmerize you, few things will. On a whole, it is more upbeat than the first disc, but never hard, or trying to reach you through pointless breaks and massive build ups. Driving techno through and through. And if those violin chords on In The Trees don't floor your body, you must have serious hearing issues. To top it all off, for you vinyl junkies, this release is available as 3xLP edition, with full and unmixed versions of many of these tracks, while digital junkies and laptop DJs can purchase full versions of each and every one of the 22 tracks used for this compilation at all major online digital music stores. To conclude: when you have a flawless mix, which consists of music churned out by a charismatic and pivotal figure such as Carl Craig, plus your ability of choice gets put to the test when you are asked to point favorites here, you know this is no fluke. What you have is a double CD release which simultaneously displays both, immense production skill and a DJ technique many can envy for not having, you realize you are not confronted with only a DJ or an important persona within the realms of Detroit techno, but a proper musician. Seriously, there is no excuse for not having this. If you like what you hear, then I suggest seeking out Carl Craig's "The Workout" mix, which is just as brilliant, but it has Carl using tracks and styles from literary all over the radar. Despite its somehow limited source of origin of the tracks, "Sessions" sounds (and is) better than three quarters of commercial mixes released these days. Way to go mr. Craig!
