Sugar and Spice is the 1966 debut album by The Cryan' Shames, originally released in mono (CL 2589) and in stereo (CS 9389). The cover photography was done by Don Bronstein. The album was recorded in two days (August 25 and 26, 1966). The liner photography was done by Rich Dienethal of River Grove, Illinois. The cover photograph was taken at The Sweet Tooth in Pipers Alley, Old Town, Chicago. The album is dedicated to Fred Bohlander.
The Cryan' Shames' debut album was typical of the more thrown-together rock LPs of the era: both sides of their first two singles and a bunch of cover versions. Sugar and Spice" and all four of the originals appear on the Legacy compilation Sugar & Spice, which makes this album superfluous if you already have that anthology. The 2002 CD Sundazed reissue is bolstered by six bonus songs: their 1967 single "Mr. Unreliable" (different from the LP version) and its laid-back B-side "Georgia," a cover of the Beatles' "You're Gonna Lose That Girl," and three previously unreleased 1969 tracks that found them going into a mellow folk/country/soft rock direction.

From Hinsdale, Illinois came the Cryan’ Shames, who were one of the top bands of the fertile Chicago music scene of the sixties. It’s a mystery why this great group failed to achieve world domination, but like a lot of artists their material has been revisited over the years, gaining them a bigger and even more appreciative fan club.
I first heard this album When it came out and was impressed by this Chicago based group. The whole album showed their style was a little different but just basic soft rock. Bought it and went back in time. Most of Sugar and Spice is covers: the Beatles "I Needed Someone," and the Animals "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. The Cryin Shames popified this music, and that is a lot different than prettying it. The vocals are the most layered, and the music is jangle pop, and it has a fun jaunt to it, driven by open guitar and never falling into sap. You know you are not listening to Hendrix, but for what this is, it is the best of the sound.
