CD 20 - Leonore III Overture - Vienna Philharmonic 06/02/1944 - Piano Concerto No. 4: III - Pietro Scarpini piano, RAI Symphony Orchestra of Rome 01/19/1952 - Violin Concerto: III - Erich Röhn violin, Berlin Philharmonic 01/12/1944 - Fidelio: Jetzt Schätzchen, jetzt sind wir allein - Lisa della Casa, Rudolf Schock, Vienna Philharmonic 08/03/1948 - Fidelio excerpts - Kirsten Flagstad, Josef Greindl, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Vienna. The Smetana sounds brilliant and multidimensional, I really love this except from "Ma Vlast" with the extensive quotes from the Rheingold Vorspiel.

Performer: Maurice Ravel, Richard Wagner, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic. Orchestra: Paul Hindemith, Cesar Franck. Conductor: Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, et al. Audio CD (February 11, 2003). There are many compilations of Wilhelm Furtwangler's live recordings on the market, and most of them are really very good, including this DG 6-CD box. Certainly, many items intersect in different compilations which is a problem. Its high points IMO are two symphonies - Brahms 2 (CD 2, tracks 3-6) and Franck in D minor (CD 5, tracks 5-7), both recorded live in Vienna the same day, 28 January, 1945 - his last war-time concert in the Third Reich.

Smetana, W Furtwangler, 1952: The Moldau - Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, LHMV-1023. Digitized from the LP shown above, released in 1954. A dynamic climax is followed by a solo flute playing the opening figure, followed by the French horn and the violas. There is a pause before the Allegro resumes, at first entrusted to cellos and double basses only. A lyrical contrast is provided in a central passage that brings its own element of conflict, before the bassoon hints again the scherzo theme, now taken up again by the rest of the orchestra. The last movement is one of considerable substance. It is introduced by the bassoon over a double bass and cello pedal in a slow preface of now familiar contour.

Death and Transfiguration (Tod und Verklärung), Op. 24, is a tone poem for large orchestra by Richard Strauss. Strauss began composition in the late summer of 1888 and completed the work on 18 November 1889. The work is dedicated to the composer's friend Friedrich Rosch. The music depicts the death of an artist. At Strauss's request, this was described in a poem by the composer's friend Alexander Ritter as an interpretation of Death and Transfiguration, after it was composed.
