The Guardian critic John Fordham, who was positive in his assessment of the album, wrote: "Only a shortage of thematic surprises – given its extravagant length – keeps it from being quite the seismically jazz-changing departure that some admirers are claiming. Seth Colter Walls of Pitchfork awarded the album with "Best New Music" tag, stating: "The Epic actually makes good on. its titular promise without bothering to make even a faint-hearted stab in the direction of fulfilling its pre-release hype.

John Beyers, for example, is a more or less true story about my hometown. But it’s more or less a modern day cowboy ballad, only instead of horses it’s Camaros. What’s your collaborative process like with your band? Do they participate in the songwriting? I usually have the songs already and bring them to the band. The songs I write are pretty musically simple. There aren’t a lot of chords and not too many changes.
Colter Wall actually hails from Saskatchewan, in Western Canada. With production help from period-conjurer Dave Cobb, he soaks his mighty baritone in reverb to reclaim a style once hugely popular - think Marty Robbins’ El Paso and Gene Autry’s Ghost Riders in the Sky - but has largely been left behind for vultures. The set walks a fine line with its retro-fetishism, but it manages to dodge hokey-ness thanks to Wall’s great voice, a low-key delivery, and invitingly haunted backdrops by legends like Lloyd Green (pedal steel) and Mickey Raphael (harmonica)
John Colter was born in Stuarts Draft, Augusta County, Colony of Virginia, 1774 based on assumptions by his family. Among the band were George Drouillard, John Potts, and Peter Weiser. Colter once again decided to return to the wilderness, even though he was only a week from reaching St. Louis.
Her 1970 album Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band is a triumph, in part, because it sounds fully aware of this reality. It’s also iconic because it contains some of Lennon’s most aggressive guitar work. Opener Why hurtles from its needle-drop opening, with slide guitar swoops and febrile picking that anticipate the variety of Ono’s vocal lines. Like Lennon’s ’70 solo album of the same name (and near-identical cover), Ono’s Plastic Ono Band initially scans as acerbic, yet manages to create a supple variety of song-forms from that opening template.
John Colter was born to be a frontiersman. A native of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, where he was born in about 1775, Colter grew up a woodsman. In October 1803, Meriwether Lewis traveled down the Ohio River recruiting men for his Corps of Discovery, which was about to strike out on its fabled journey across the continent to map and explore. He may also have had experience as a ranger under legendary frontiersman Simon Kenton. Lewis was obviously impressed with Colter and offered him a position as a private with a salary of five dollars a month. The military lifestyle does not seem to have agreed with Colter at first.
