A New Brain (2015 New York Cast Recording). Released February 5, 2016. A New Brain (2015 New York Cast Recording) Tracklist. The original musical opened on May 14, 1998 off-Broadway. The musical had started as a string of songs William Finn had written while in the hospital, which eventually transformed into A New Brain. The original cast featured Malcolm Gets as Gordon Schwinn, Kristin Chenoweth as Nancy D, and Chip Zien as Mr. Bungee. This recording is the 2015 revival cast recording, where it was performed in New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Central season.
William Finn's creative genius is exemplified in the fourth track, "Heart and Music. Not only is the song wonderfully melodic and singable, but the lyrics foreshadow the rest of the musical. This production is quite the achievement. Lovely, likable characters and amazing multi-part harmonies. Ballards that give you chills; this show is one to really sit back and enjoy. The cast on this album are exceptional.
Album · 2003 · 20 Songs. Seussical (Original Off Broadway Cast). Dessa Rose (Original Cast Recording: The Lincoln Center Theater Production). The Glorious Ones (The Lincoln Center Theater Production). A New Brain (Original Cast Recording). Falsettoland (Original Off-Broadway Cast).
For various reasons (including illness, chronicled in his 1998 show A New Brain), Finn's career has suffered interruptions and misfires, even as it has produced some brilliant music, which makes Make Me a Song all the more valuable, since it draws not only from produced shows but also unproduced ones and various special projects on which Finn has worked over. The Marvin trilogy told the story of a Jewish man in New York who leaves his wife and child to move in with another man, and Finn's sensibility is rooted in that sort of identity elsewhere, too.
