Swing is the fifteenth studio album by Australian soul and R&B singer Renée Geyer. Geyer told The Sydney Morning Herald that Swing was inspired by Frank Sinatra's 1966 recording with Count Basie in Las Vegas, an album she had long admired. But it took the success of Michael Buble to convince her that she should lend her distinctive voice to a big-band album.
Clarinetist Harry Skoler followed firmly in the tradition of his idol Benny Goodman, resurrecting the classic music of the swing era for appreciative contemporary audiences. Born in Syracuse, NY, in 1956, Skoler was introduced to Goodman's music while still a teen; announcing his intentions to become a professional jazz clarinetist, in the years to follow he also added saxophone, flute, and piano to his repertoire before graduating from the Berklee College of Music in 1978.
Though a t with degrees from Berklee and the New England School of Music, here, Skoler returns to his first inspiration, clarinet. Subtitled A Tribute to Benny Goodman, Skoler spins evocative variations atop such classic BG fare as After You’ve Gone, Don’t Be That Way and Flying Home. We play some of the first tunes that I had loved when I was a kid, Skoler notes.
On his latest album, Harry Skoler opens his repertoire and his orchestral possibilities as wide as his heart, letting in new people and new ideas. In addition to his trusted rhythm section of bassist Richard Kimball and drummer Tim Gilmore, Harry adds the formidable talents of neighborhood fret-master Garrison Fewell and ducer Donn Trenner, who has also worked with other reed masters like Stan Getz and Charlie Parker, as well as Tommy Dorsey, Lena Horne and Skoler’s label-mate Paul Broadnax. On a few selections, Skoler lets a hand-picked string section.
