The Whitefield Brothers are a German funk band. The band, which consists of brothers Jan and Max Weissenfeldt, was previously known as the "'Poets of Rhythm"' beginning in 1991. Under this name, they were signed to the Quannum Projects label after they were discovered by Lyrics Born. As the Whitefield Brothers, they released their debut album In the Raw in 2001 and their second album, Earthology, in 2010.

For this belated follow-up to their 2001 debut "In The Raw", the Munich-based Whitefield siblings Jan and Max have broadened their funk-soul approach with a range of African influences, albeit heavier, big-band flavours than those employed by Vampire Weekend. Drafting in members of Antibalas, Quantic and The Dap-Kings to give their sound a horn-based ballast, they've produced in Earthology a sort of world-jazz-groove album whose blend of camel-walk rhythms, burring saxes and spacey organ and electric piano resembles the more Afrocentric entries in Sun Ra's varied back-catalogue.

While the previous album showcased stoner funk laced with African and Caribbean elements, Earthology jumps a whole lot further. In addition to gritty bass, drums, horns, distorted organs, and guitars, the group has extended itself into even more tripped-out terrain, looking deeper into world music traditions and hip-hop. MCs Edan and Mr. Lif assist on "The Gift," Percee P and MED help on "Reverse," and Bajka lets it rip on the slamming album opener Joyful Exaltation

The Whitefield Brothers: Earthology Guitarist Jan and drummer Max Weissenfeldt got the hang of deep funk in boogie-down Munich under their Poets of Rhythm alias. But on this reassuring piece of big-bottomed exotica, the "Sahara swing" they concocted with Karl Hector is the tipoff.

Earthology finds the brothers infusing their raw soul funk with musical traditions that span the globe. commonplace on a funk or psych album; arabic rhythmical structures, african pentatonic scales and oriental modes do not. the whitefield brothers, and a multitude of guests ranging from vocalists edan, mr lif, bajka, percee p and med to musicians from antibalas, el michels affair, quantic and the dap-kings, set these elements in a modern context and, over the course of 13 dense. tracks, blend them with the fierce funk their fans have grown to love. They all have. It was recorded with old studio gear deliberately to sound like it was recorded in 70s Africa. Some cool articles about it online
