Voëlvry was the Boere-Woodstock,’ writes Max du Preez. It was a significant movement in every social, political, cultural and musical sense of the word. Rock revolution just got a delicious new double meaning. In what the Cape Times described as ‘an unprecedented orgy of Afrikaner anarchy’, the Alternative Afrikaans Music Movement unleashed Boere Beatlemania among the youth and apoplexy within the Afrikaner establishment.
Some Bizzare Album was the first album by Some Bizzare Records. It was released in 1981 as a sampler of the label's musical ethos. The acts were not actually signed exclusively to the label at the time. The album consisted of tracks by unsigned synthpop groups, including future alternative icons Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, The The and Blancmange. The compilation saw the first ever released recording of Depeche Mode. Some Bizzare Album was Stevo Pearce’s vision.
In 1989, they released the album Eet Kreef (Eat Crayfish) on the now-defunct Shifty Records label, which was a commercial success despite its tracks being banned from radio airplay by the state-controlled South African Broadcasting Corporation, which was (and still is) the government mouthpiece. Colloquially, 'Eet Kreef' is ambiguous, meaning either 'Enjoy!' or 'Get lost!'.

The Voëlvry ( free as a bird ) tour was an anti-apartheid uprising of sorts: disaffected rock artists performing in Afrikaans on campuses countrywide. Not surprisingly, Wie is Bernoldus Niemand? was banned by the state broadcaster. The satirising of the army experience – which so many young white South Africans could relate to – would become a regular theme for later Voëlvry artists. Hou my vas Korporaal also became the unofficial anthem of the End Conscription Campaign. The cover of Johannes Kerkorrel & Gereformeerde Blues Band’s album ‘Eet Kreef’.
