Box of Frogs' two albums, Box of Frogs and Strange Land, were reissued on a single disc by Renaissance Records in 1996. Both albums are rather uneven and a little undistinguished, yet they may appeal to fans of mainstream AOR hard rock from the early '80s. For Yardbirds fans, this is essentially a curiosity, since it doesn't have the spark, sound or style of the Yardbirds, despite featuring Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja and Paul Samwell-Smith.
A new version of Last. Box Of Frogs, Strange Land. Overview (current section).
Box of Frogs were a band formed in 1983 by former members of the Yardbirds, who released their first album in 1984. The core group consisted of Chris Dreja, Paul Samwell-Smith, and Jim McCarty. Vocals on their eponymous album were done by John Fiddler, formerly of Medicine Head and British Lions; on the second album Fiddler sang on five tracks with guests including Graham Parker, Ian Dury and Roger Chapman singing lead on the others.
The self titled Box of Frogs album was the best album of 1984. Everyone was listening to MJ's thriller (ack-pthht), I was listening to this. I didn't make the same connection to Strangeland, but I still enjoy the first album. In addition to the core band, most of the tracks across both albums, BOX OF FROGS ('84) and STRANGE LAND ('86), are rounded out with a veritable who's who of rock, including old bandmates Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Rory Gallagher, Roger Chapman, Graham Gouldman, Steve Hackett, Graham Parker, and others grace the guest lineups as well.
Box of Frogs was a band formed in 1983 by former members of The Yardbirds, who released their first album in 1984. Many musicians guested on their albums (including Rory Gallagher, Earl Slick and Mark Feltham), with several tracks featuring Steve Hackett.
Blues-based hard rock combo Box of Frogs reunited guitarist Chris Dreja, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, and drummer Jim McCarty, all three founding members of the famed Yardbirds. Fellow Yardbirds alum Jeff Beck guested on several tracks on the group's self-titled 1984 LP, with Jimmy Page appearing on the 1986 follow-up Strange Land. Box of Frogs disbanded soon after.
