Muzzle" is a song by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins from their third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It was one of the last songs written by Billy Corgan for Mellon Collie, with the song's lyrics referring to what Corgan thought the public's perception was of him at the time.
The album brought in eight Grammy nominations and ranks as one of Rolling Stone’s Greatest Albums of All Time. The famous face of the woman on the album cover comes from Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s The Souvenir, a painting from the 18th century. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Q&A. What is the album about? Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is not the Smashing Pumpkins‘ best album. That honor goes to Siamese Dream, an album that represents the pinnacle of alternative rock before it became a punchline. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is also not the most important Pumpkins album, however dubious the distinction, though that’s probably arguable. I’d say that Siamese still wins that one for representing such a dramatic shift in the band’s ambition and capabilities
Mellon Collie is a very dark album and the production is fairly stark in some places, but there’s something about the darkness of it all that really resonated. Even with al. ock at its mid-90s height, Corgan understood that Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness needed widespread airplay to impact globally, so he ensured the album also included some of his band’s tastiest singles.

Mellon Collie's remarkable breadth is the best indication of Corgan's ability to let loose. But there is a way of hearing the same album differently as you refract it through your own experiences. Thru the Eyes of Ruby" is rumored to have contained 70 guitar tracks; it's a wedding vow punctuated by Corgan snarling "youth is wasted on the young.
Although Mellon Collie clocks in at more than two hours, it’s one of the rare epic rock releases whose bulk is justified in the grooves (it certainly beats the comparable length of, say, the Use Your Illusion records by Guns n’ Roses, which were marketed as two separate LPs). The accomplishment is even more impressive when you consider that Corgan single-handedly wrote 26 of the songs, and he co-produced the album with Flood (U2, Depeche Mode) and Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Nine Inch Nails)
The Deluxe Box Set's 5 CDs include 64 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of MELLON COLLIE era songs, and its DVD features a live show filmed at the Brixton Academy, London (1996) and bonus performances from the German music television show Rockpalast (1996).
