Church with No Magic - Very Good, Based on 6 Critics. Processed beats, regurgitated ideas and tired talent have all claimed their victims when we weren’t looking. Take MIA. Sure, her neverending paranoia and sheer gobbiness makes her a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma – topped off with a generous helping of puzzle.

Instead, PVT take a much darker route, evoking the more rhythmic elements of modern art-rock evoked by acts like These New Puritans and Liars. The video for album track "Window" allowed a window (sorry) into these guys' creative process- samplers, computers, more samplers- conveying in just three minutes that, yes, this is thought-intensive music. Every element exists as a piece to a larger puzzle, like Pike's nervous utterances that open the title track or the disconnected noise that jarringly emerges midway through "Crimson Swan". Emphasizing the notion that this is brainy music would be ignoring the fact that PVT frequently achieve melodic catharsis on Church With No Magic. A lot of this is due to Pike's considerable vocal register, which can convey low resonance and high-frequency wailing alike.

employs some of the 80s sounds that have been done to absolute death by every geek with a Korg lying about his student flat, but so embedded are they within PVT’s aesthetic and constancy of sound that it’s easily forgiven. If their debut sounded like they listened to nothing but the sounds in their heads and tried to recreate them, this sounds like all they’ve listened to over the past two years is their own records, and subsequently tried to better them. 2 Light Up Bright Fires. 3 Church With No Magic.

Church with No Magic reveals that in the two years between this album and O Soundtrack My Heart, PVT went through some significant changes. The most obvious is the alteration of the band’s name (thanks to a legal scuffle with a . band also called Pivot), but the addition of Richard Pike's vocals to PVT’s mix of post-rock, electronica, and prog is almost as immediate. For the most part, it’s a change for the better, adding focus to the band’s overflowing sounds and ideas. Despite all the changes, PVT remain committed to their experimental roots. Elsewhere, Community and Waves and Radiation 's rippling analog synths show that they love Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis as much as they did on their earlier albums.

Pvt, the band formerly known as Pivot, return to Warp with CHURCH WITH NO MAGIC, another album of dense math rock, though the opener, "Community" does indeed sound like a hymn, but "Light Up Bright Fires" quickly dives into the percussive rock. The title track goes slightly more spare, but turns up the reverb, while "Crimson Swan," with its angelic chorus, rises up to the heavens. "Waves And Radiation" stays resolutely earthbound, however, with its atmospheric build, before "Only The Wind Can Hear You" closes out the album carrying an ache in the vocals. A solid effort.
