Byron Aihara is raising funds for Dance Music and Ritual in Manipur on Kickstarter! The first in depth photography book on the dance, music, and rituals of the Northeast Indian state of Manipur. Last year, while in Manipur I was able to put together an album of MP3 musics which featured the master Pena musician Oja Khangembam Mangi playing the ritual Lai Haraoba music known as Yakeiba (Morning Invocations). The Yakeiba are played at dawn to wake the Lai deities from sleep. This was the first time that this music has ever been recorded and filmed in its actual ritual setting at Lai Haraoba. You will receive a signed copy of Dance Music and Ritual in Manipur, with a hand written and signed thank you message by the author. Your name will be printed Inside the book. Manipur is one of the northeast states within the country of India. It is landlocked, and geographically part of the southward turning curve of the eastern most Himalayas. Here surrounded by hills and mountains, 2,500 feet above sea level is the rich and fertile Imphal valley. The majority ethnic groups known as the Meitei and Chakpa have a history created from a 2000 year legacy of courtly and village agrarian societies which were ruled by kingdoms who based their origins from mythical gods. Manipur also has a courtly classical dance tradition. It is exemplified in the form known as Ras Lila.
