Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is the soundtrack album for the Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy. Featuring the songs present on Peter Quill's mixtape in the film, the album was released by Hollywood Records on July 29, 2014. A separate film score album, Guardians of the Galaxy, composed by Tyler Bates, was also released by Hollywood Records on the same date, along with a deluxe version featuring both albums. The soundtrack album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album in history consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. The album topped the Billboard Top Soundtracks for 11 consecutive weeks and 16 weeks in total. As of April 2017, it has sold over . 5 million copies in the United States alone, and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA.

With thirteen films represented on the album, there is plenty of variety, but there is nothing really "classic" about the selections. The oldest film, Out of Africa, isn't even 20 years old. It's almost like "the best of the past decade" - but even then, not the best. Finally, the album ends with Titanic. It starts off like traditional score, but just when you thought it was going to be a nice suite, it devolves into another orchestral pop version of the Celine Dion song. Overall, this is a solid album that's enjoyable to listen to, and if you're a fan of cheesy-pop orchestral versions of songs, the last half will strongly appeal to you. But I do wish they put some older classic film scores on here.

Stage & Screen Film Music Soundtracks. Soundtracks contain music featured in movies and television soundtracks. Usually, these include excerpts of the score and incidental music, plus songs featured in the films or programs. In the '90s, it became a common practice for labels to move beyond this strict definition and include songs "inspired by" the film/show. Generally, this was a marketing move, a way to reach a wider audience, and the records consequently suffered, but there were also some good albums to come out of this trend
