Summerteeth (stylized as summerteeth) is the third studio album by the American alternative rock band Wilco, released on March 9, 1999 by Reprise Records. The album was heavily influenced lyrically by 20th century literature, as well as singer Jeff Tweedy's marital problems. Unlike previous albums, Summerteeth was heavily overdubbed in the studio with Pro Tools

In late 1998, Summerteeth was basically finished. Wilco had been shuttling back and forth between the recording of this, their third album, and Mermaid Avenue, a collaboration with Billy Bragg built entirely on the skeletons of unfinished Woodie Guthrie songs.

Wilco’s Summerteeth is often overlooked simply due to the gravity of the album it preceded. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the album most closely associated with the story of Wilco, the one where Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett’s working relationship was irrevocably ruptured, the one that led to the split from the label and changed the way people hear albums, and the one whose making was agonizingly captured by Sam Jones’ cameras on the famous documentary I Am. Trying to Break Your Heart. The album served as the peak before the fall as Tweedy and Bennett found themselves in sync - much to the frustration of the rest of the band.

Wilco have been called a ‘critics band’, and perhaps there is some truth in that. As English buffs can unpick the subtleties of Shakespeare’s work and try to guess at why it’s so brilliant, so they too can dissect the ins and outs of what makes Wilco, Wilco. I suppose I’ve done a similar thing here – taken the cogs out of the clockwork of the album and try to say which one does what.

Summerteeth is the third studio album by Chicago alternative rock band Wilco. Released through Reprise Records on March 9, 1999, the album was heavily influenced lyrically by twentieth century literature, as well as singer Jeff Tweedy's marital problems. Unlike previous albums, Summerteeth was heavily overdubbed in the studio with Pro Tools. Tweedy and Jay Bennett created most of the album in the studio, a contrast to the band's previous albums, which were rehearsed live and recorded almost at once.
