Liederkreis, Op. 24, is a song cycle for voice and piano composed by Robert Schumann on nine poems by Heinrich Heine. The cycle was composed and published in 1840. This song cycle was one of the earlier products of Schumann’s Liederjahr (Year of Song), referring to his nearly exclusive devotion to song composition from 1840-1841, immediately after his marriage to Clara Wieck. A letter from Schumann to his wife likely places the date of composition in February.

24, Bauer thoroughly inhabits the rarefied German Romantic air of Schumann's music. Bauer lives Schumann's long-breathed melodies and ardent phrasing, pressing into his climaxes and lingering in his codas, bringing passionate intensity to every song from the intimate to the impetuous to the ethereal to the inflamed and making it all sound completely natural and graceful.

In 1840 he was given an honorary doctorate, wrote the Liederkreis (song cycle) op 24 on poems of Heine, and then married Clara Wieck. Schumann had a work style of focusing on a single form at a time. In 1840 he wrote a flood of songs, more than 150 of them, including the large song cycles included on this disk.

Robert Schumann Composer. Robert Schumann Composer. Romanzen und Balladen I, No. 3, Abends am Strand (wds. Heine). Every one of the magnificent Op. 24 songs has some moment of illumination, whether it’s the terror conveyed so immediately – and immediacy of reaction is of the essence all-round here – in Schone Wiege, the breathtaking beauty and sorrow of Anfang wollt ich or the breadth and intensity of Mit Myrten und Rosen. In this last song you may find the underlining in the final stanza a shade too overt, but then that is the obverse of Bostridge’s acute feeling for the flavour of each word in a song, evident throughout this recital.

Les poèmes de Heine s’inspirent de liaisons amoureuses brisées. The poem outlines the tension of a twenty-four-hour vigil.
