Guitar is a 1988 live album by Frank Zappa. It is the follow-up to 1981's Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar; like that album it features Zappa's guitar solos excerpted from live performances, recorded between 1979 and 1984. It garnered Zappa his sixth Grammy nomination for "Best Rock Instrumental Performance".

Frank Zappa biography Frank Vincent ZAPPA - December 12, 1940 (Baltimore, USA), December 4, 1993 (Los Angeles, USA). When he was 10 years old, he moved to California with his parents. The first instrument he played was the drums. At that time, Frank ZAPPA really liked rhythm and blues music. But in 1954, ZAPPA found a copy of "The Complete Works Of Edgar Varse, Vol. One". Zappa's second solo-album "Hot Rats" contains some great instrumental (except for CAPTAIN BEEFHEART's vocals on "Willie The Pimp") jazzrock. Hot Rats" is definitily among his best albums. But, if you are unfamiliar with ZAPPA's work, the albums of THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION and ZAPPA's solo-albums from the sixties may scare you off.

Zappa’s album cover pre-empted the inevitable stickering with a bright yellow and red box reading Warning Guarantee, full of tongue-in-cheek small print like GUARANTEED NOT TO CAUSE ETERNAL TORMENT IN THE PLACE WHERE THE GUY WITH THE HORNS AND POINTED STICK CONDUCTS HIS BUSINESS. All this incessant needling of the PMRC must have really got to them, fans figured, when Zappa’s 1986 record Jazz from Hell began appearing, it's said, in record stores with a parental advisory label-on an album without lyrics of any kind.

Frank Zappa Guitars & Playing Style. Frank Zappa’s first electric guitar was a rented Telecaster, which he obtained when he was 21. He later bought a Jazzmaster. His improvisation falls somewhere between rock and jazz; but ‘fusion’ is too clean a word to describe Zappa’s dirty tones! His improvisation, unsurprisingly, is inventive and original, combining elements of blues, jazz and avant-garde music. The best way to discover Zappa’s guitar playing is to listen to his Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar album, which is a collection of guitar solos (see below). Frank Zappa – Apostrophe. Another classic Zappa album, containing such gems as ‘Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow’ and ‘Uncle Remus’. A hand-picked selection of fine musicians playing humorous, experimental rock music. A good ‘first’ Zappa album, along with Sheik Yerbouti. Honorable Mention: Shut Up N’ Play Yer Guitar.
