Samla Mammas Manna was a progressive rock band from Uppsala, Sweden, formed in 1969 by Lars Hollmer, Lars Krantz, Hans Bruniusson, and Henrik Öberg ("Bebben"). The band was often characterized by its virtuoso musicianship, circus references and silly humour, similar in many ways to the song-writing styles of Frank Zappa. They were part of the original Rock in Opposition movement. Guitarist Coste Apetrea joined in 1972, later to be replaced by Eino Haapala.
Recorded By – Lars Hollmer, Samla. This CD was recorded during Autumn of 1998 in the location of The Chickenhouse, Uppsala. Kaka (CDr, Album, Unofficial).
Especially for this album, Samla Mammas Manna recruited a fusion guitarist Coste Apetrea, whose gentle touch plays an important role in the band's music. Despite Apertrea's outstanding solo parts, he does not seem to have an urge of being at the first plan with his guitar often playing a role of a rhythm instrument that lays down a simple groove and repeats it. Lars Hollmer, the band's keyboardist showcases his versatility, going from bebop-like and even piano touches to full-on fusion passages on Fender Rhodes
As fun as this all sounds, Bruniusson would leave the Samlas (again) after Kaka, replaced by high-energy powerhouse Tatsuya Yoshida, and the band would not return to the Chickenhouse to record an album ever again.
It was at the Chickenhouse that Samla Mammas Manna recorded their self-titled debut album of 1971 for Silence Records. berg left the group that year, and the Samlas spent several months as a trio before guitarist Coste Apetrea came on board in 1972. Following the release of the Kaka album in 1999, Bruniusson departed from the band, however, and was replaced by Japanese drummer Tatsuya Yoshida (of Hollmer's SOLA project, Ruins, and Koenji Hyakkei).
Samla Mammas Manna was a Swedish progressive rock band often characterized by virtuosic musicianship, circus references and silly humour, similar in many ways to the song-writing style of Frank Zappa. They were one of the founding members of the Rock in Opposition (RIO) movement in the late 1970s. In 1979 they were Fred Frith's backing band on his solo album, Gravity (1980). Musically, they bore a resemblance to the Canterbury scene. In 1999, the band reformed under their original name for a one-off release entitled Kaka. In 2002 they reunited again, this time with Japanese musician Yoshida Tatsuya on drums, for some performances and their final album Dear Mamma.
