In honor of the Woody Guthrie Centennial, Smithsonian Folkways presents an in-depth commemorative collection of songs, photos and essays on one of America’s most treasured 20th-century icons. Many have embraced This Land Is Your Land as America's second national anthem. Woody was ordinary, yet extraordinary-a traveler, itinerant worker, radio performer, military enlistee, thinking man, gifted visual artist, a husband and father, and prolific writer who left his mark on music, culture and politics.

Then, Woody heard the heavenly voices of the soldiers of color who were relegated by segregation to the lowest part of the ship and ran down to sing with them. Unfortunately, the segregation rules of the land at the time, applied to ships as well and Woody was asked to leave by the Sergeant who said, It’s against the rules. Woody responded, There’s one rule that’s bigger than all the other rules – the Golden Rule and Woody refused to leave. The Sergeant got the Army Captain who said I don’t make the rules, but we must adhere to them. Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center.
