The Violin-piano Sonata is opus 2. On the other hand the Cello-Piano Sonata (as well as the second piano trio and piano quartet featured on the companion disc) is a composition of Scharwenka's early maturity: it dates from 1877 - which still makes it the work of a young man. Only the short Serenade for violin and piano is a later piece, from 1895. Later in his career Scharwenka seems not to have set much store on his earlier chamber music compositions, giving more importance to his piano concertos and symphony. He must have forgotten.
Along with the cello-piano sonata, the second piano trio and piano quartet featured on the present disc date from Scharwenka's early maturity: they were composed between 1876 and 1878.

Both the Piano Trio in F sharp minor, Op 1, and the Violin Sonata in D minor, Op 2, were probably conceived whilst Scharwenka was still studying at Kullak’s Academy, although the young composer was quick to attract sufficient attention for Breitkopf und Härtel, the famous German music-publishing house, to accept these early compositions, which duly appeared in print in 1869

Sir Edward Elgar wrote his Violin Sonata in E minor, Op. 82, in 1918, at the same time as he wrote his String Quartet in E minor and his Piano Quintet in A minor. These three chamber music works were all written at "Brinkwells", the country house near Fittleworth in West Sussex that Lady Elgar had acquired for her husband to recuperate and compose in, and they mark his major contribution to the chamber music genre
