Drawing upon traditions as varied as Messiaen, Xenakis, Ligeti, Bach, Tournemire, Ives, Korla Pandit and The Phantom of the Opera, Zorn’s organ improvisations are transcendent, inspiring, ecstatic experiences, offering a direct line to the workings of his rich compositional imagination. Recorded at midnight on the eve of Halloween on the largest organ in New York City, Zorn approaches this performance as ritual, creating a mysterious mood of contrasts, colors, bells, drones, counterpoint and simultaneity.

The Hermetic Organ is an album by John Zorn, consisting of a single live improvisation on the Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ of St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University, which was released on Tzadik Records in June 2012. The performance was held at 11 PM on the evening of December 9, 2011, which Zorn has noted was a full moon, as an encore to a "Composer Portrait" ensemble performance of his works held earlier that night at the Miller Theatre

As one of John Zorn's initial instruments, he clearly appreciates the organ's potential power. After years as a saxophonist, composer, arranger and producer, Zorn returned to the instrument in 2011. This didn't happen through the organ setting on a digital keyboard; this homecoming happened on actual cathedral pipe organs. Zorn performed a series of concerts in American and European churches. Out of these live performances, "The Hermetic Organ" represents the culmination of this musical mood with a concert at St. Paul's Chapel in New York City.

I'm pretty sure the sigil of this volume (being the same as vol. 3) is a misprint, as I have looked at another variant on google images (and Tzadik.com as well ) of this very album but with a different sigil on the cover (a unique sigil, in this case, which isn't in the cover of any other Hermetic Organ)
