The Reverend Horton Heat is the stage name of American musician Jim Heath (born 1959) as well as the name of his Dallas, Texas-based psychobilly trio. The group formed in 1985, playing its first gigs in Dallas's Deep Ellum neighborhood. The band signed to Victory Records on November 27, 2012, and released its 11th studio album, REV, on January 21, 2014. The band describes itself as "country-fed punkabilly". The band mixes country, surf, punk, big band, swing and rockabilly into loud, energetic songs with often-humorous lyrics. Video games, cartoons and commercials have used the band's songs, giving The Reverend Horton Heat mainstream exposure.
REVEREND HORTON HEAT still performs nearly 200 shows annually, including their trademark Horton’s Hayride Festival in Southern California, which has expanded to an end-of-the-year jamboree under the name Horton’s Holiday Hayride. The band has also wowed sold-out crowds with their multi-city residencies across America, including performances at Coachella, Reading, Austin City Limits, Riot Fest and countless other festivals. Recalling the time the band opened for Jerry Lee Lewis, Heath had a vision, The idea of playing in Jerry’s backing band would have been pretty neat. So every once in a while we’ll have a load of fun putting that aspect in our live set. In the middle of our set, we’ll have a special guest come on stage for a mini-set where REVEREND HORTON HEAT is the backing band. The first time we did it was with Lemmy Kilmister.

Reverend Horton Heat’s Rev is sure to please long term fans as it brings back memories of classic Heat such as Psychobilly Freakout, Baddest Of The Bad and Big Red Rocket Of Love. Reverend Horton Heat has been around for a long time. If this album is any indication of what is left in the tank, I hope we get another eleven sets out of the band. Excluding the fun detour into country that is "Laughing and Crying", Rev is the first RHH album for almost 10 years. And Rev delivers a gem that could easily have been a followup to Full Custom or Liquor. It is raw, it gets in your face and rocks, and discards studio processing for an almost live feel that shows off why the Reverend is still packing concert halls with die-hard fans.
REV doesn't break much new ground for this band, but in the truest sense that's the point: Heath and his bandmates have been taking plenty of detours in recent years, some satisfying and some disappointing, but REV is where they step back into their comfort zone and do what they do best.
