Warm and melodic, Tim Hecker’s album RADIO AMOR pulses and throb is aching beauty. Though mostly beatless, it engages the listener to drift into a space between the machine and the soul. (They Call Me) Jimmy is an electronic sigh, while Careless Whispers actually whispers (though not careless at all)
Tim Hecker's first album for Mille Plateaux, Radio Amor, follows two excellent efforts for the relatively smaller yet similarly prestigious Substractif label, and accordingly consolidates that pair into his most inclusive and presentable recording yet. It merges the haunting majesty of his debut full-length, Haunt Me Haunt Me, Do It Again (2001), with the loose conceptual framework of his follow-up EP, My Love Is Rotten to the Core (2002), and does so without being quite as overbearing as those two releases may have felt to listeners interested in simply engaging music rather than far-fet.

Tim Hecker's second full-length under his own name- originally on Mille Plateaux in 2003, then out of print, now reissued on Alien 8- was inspired in part by an image of a commercial fisherman gracefully tending to his boat's rigging. When I hear background like this about an instrumental album, I always try to listen at least once without thinking of the reference. But the remainder of the album, through accident or design, doesn't sustain the aquatic vibe. The prevailing theme of Radio Amor sounds to me now like a struggle for connection. It's a conversation that hopes to be carried across frayed wires that are constantly shorting out, causing the signal to disintegrate in a cloud of static. It's not voices per se that are trying to get over, but essences, information.

Hecker's first two albums under his own name came out in 2001 and 2003 respectively. The first, Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again, was released on Substractif with Radio Amor following on Mille Plateaux a couple of years later. The upcoming Kranky reissues were remastered by Matt Colton and will come out on CD and vinyl. The label, which put out four albums from Hecker between 2004 and 2013, has also announced they'll handle the Canadian sound artist's forthcoming 2018 LP, which is his tenth. His last full-length record, Love Streams, came via 4AD. We'll have more information.
Canadian composer Tim Hecker celebrates a remastering and subsequent re-issue on Kranky, of his album Radio Amor, that was first released in 2003 by Mille Plateaux and subsequently by Alien8 Recordings. Inspired partially by Hecker’s observations of a Honduran fishing village, Radio Amor is a minimalist work constructed of drone sounds, guitar feedback, messy in spite of its majestic arrangement and composition.
