Genius + Soul Jazz is a 1961 album by Ray Charles featuring big band arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Charles is accompanied by two groups drawn from members of The Count Basie Band and from the ranks of top New York session players. It was recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in two sessions on December 26 and 27, 1960 and originally released on the Impulse! label as Impulse! A–2.

One of the best early-'60s examples of soul-jazz crossover, this record, like several of his dates from the period, featured big-band arrangements (played by the Count Basie band). This fared better than some of Charles' similar outings, however, if only because it muted some of his straight pop aspirations in favor of some pretty mean and lean, the-matter B-3 Hammond organ licks. Most of the album is instrumental and swings vivaciously, although Charles does take a couple of vocals with "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town" and "I've.

Ray Charles spent the 1950s and 1960s transforming the atomic American musics of gospel, the blues, R&B and country into what has been tagged "soul. Should jazz have been immune to his considerable charms? No, of course not. During the early 1960s, Charles was making his transition from Atlantic Records to ABC Records. The original Genius + Soul Jazz was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, late in 1960.

GENIUS + SOUL JAZZ features big band arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. It was recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in two sessions on December 26 and 27,1960 and originally released on the Impulse! label. Disc 2 has arrangements by Roger Neumann, Alf Clausen, Teddy Edwards and Jimmy Heath. The personnel passing through includes many jazz greats such as Clark Terry, "Snookie" Young and Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Urbie Green and Steve Turre on trombone, Marshall Royal, Frank Wess, Frank Foster and "Fathead" Newman on sax, Freddie Green on guitar and Sonny Payne and Roy Haynes on drums. Of course there's Ray Charles himself on piano, organ and a few vocals.
