Terry HQ' by TERRY, released 30 June 2016 1. Moscow on Thames 2. Hot Heads 3. Alfred 4. Uncle Greg 5. Don't Say Sorry 6. Bring Me The Bomb 7. Chitter Chatter 8. Third War 9. Uncle Greg 2 10. Hang Me. It's hard not to listen to it all in the one sitting, though at only 22 and a half minutes you pretty much can anyway. The short length of the album is the only fault I can find, and Chitter Chatter is, I reckon, one of the tracks of the year. No. 48 in my Top 100 Albums Of 2016 & Chitter Chatter No. 12 in my Top 20 Tracks Of 2016. cade Terry is the bastard child of everything great about Australian post-punk and for lack of a better word 'slacker' rock. Live they become something even more powerful.

Their debut album, TERRY HQ, takes a giant leap in that direction. With the four members (Al Monfort, Amy Hill, Zephyr Pavey, and Xanthe Waite) sharing songwriting duties and trading off vocal chores, the album is truly a collaborative affair that delves into chiming New Zealand-style pop, clattering indie rock, and gentle, almost austere ballads. It has an easygoing intimacy that is partly down to there being two couples in the band, and partly down to the casual, almost thrown-together nature of the record.

Terry’s way of avoiding excessive earnestness is more about absurdity than apology. Take The Whip, whose lyrics read as pure wordplay: The whip of wealth/The whipper wheels/The whipper feels it’s fine. Even though their songs are pretty simple, Terry have keen ears for texture, layering in a range of tones and tempos that make the album unpredictable enough to encourage multiple listens. The deftness with which they subtly shift sounds from track to track is an object lesson in the undersung richness and diversity of the indie pop aesthetic
