Audiophile pressing or naught, what remains as the centerpiece are the selections that the co-leads cut during a mid-May 1957 session with Mal Waldron (piano), plus a rhythm section consisting of Julian Euell (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums)

Coltrane is an album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1957 on Prestige Records, catalogue 7105. The recordings took place at the studio of Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, New Jersey, and document Coltrane's first session as a leader. It has been reissued at times under the title of The First Trane!. As a result of his exposure as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige Records owner and producer Bob Weinstock offered Coltrane a recording contract.

This album reveals the genesis of Trane's signature sound, but it also reveals his R&B roots that were honed when he was with Eddie Vinson. In that respect pairing him with Quinichette was serendipitous because his blues-infused playing that was developed and honed with Basie's Kansas City style was a perfect match for Trane's early influences. Listen to the sound samples. Even though they are short, each is sufficiently long to show the complementary and contrasting aspects of Trane and Quinichette.

It’s not even really a Gordon album. It's a compilation with side A being a blowing competition between Gordon and Wardell Gray (whoever he was) for the benefit of a very enthusiastic audience at the Circus Auditorium in Pasadena in 1952. The battle between the two tenor players is firey and bluesy, but their period pyrotechnics were probably better enjoyed by the crowd at the time (if the applause is any indication) than by me in my kitchen bereft of the showmanship of the moment.
