Pilfers are an American ska band formed in 1997, when former Toasters vocalist, Coolie Ranx, at the urging of Pietaster's vocalist Steve Jackson, joined with former Bim Skala Bim trombonist, Vinny Nobile. To complete the lineup, they recruited the Skinnerbox rhythm section of Anna Milat-Meyer on bass and James Blanck on drums, as well as guitar player, Nick Bacon of The Erratics.
The label was also home of the first four album covers by cult Artist Rob Dobi, known for his parody send up of emo fashion How to Dress Emo and his clothing company Full Bleed. In 2007 the label began a project to reissue popular 3rd Wave Ska albums from defunct labels. In a joint effort between Asbestos Records, Chicago, IL's Underground Communiqué Records and Ska Is Dead, the three started a Ska Is Dead 7" Subscription Series made up of six split 7" records. Each 7" featured two currently active ska bands. Series 1 has been completely released with Series 2 on the wa. .The label has also been involved in reissuing the portion of They Might Be Giants' discography that was originally released on Elektra Records.
The Snails are an eclectic act specializing in various forms of Jamaican music, blended with ragged 50's rock 'n' roll and the sweet sounds of American soul. The Philadelphia-based band is fronted by Todd Fausnacht on lead guitar, complemented by Tim Hildebrand on rhythm guitar. The driving beats spring from the rhythm section comprised of Josh Parry on drums, Ben Parry on bass, and Kyle Williams on organ. Though Fausnacht's vocals lead the group, it's not uncommon for the voices of all five members to come together in cascading harmony. The Snails just released their vinyl debut, a new 4-song EP "The River," recorded at Version City and distributed by Stubborn Records as well as a 45 split with Pilfers via Asbestos Records’ Ska Is Dead project. Funding for another split with King Django via Big Tunes and a new 4-song EP are also in the works.
