Cruising with Ruben & the Jets is the fourth studio album by the Mothers of Invention. Released on December 2, 1968, on Bizarre and Verve Records with distribution by MGM Records, it was subsequently remixed by Frank Zappa and reissued independently. As with the band's previous three albums, it is a concept album, influenced by 1950s doo wop and rock and roll.

Frank Zappa loved '50s doo wop music. He grew up with it, collected it, and it was the first kind of pop music he wrote ("Memories of El Monte," recorded by the Penguins in 1962). Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, the Mothers of Invention's fourth LP, is a collection of such music, all Zappa originals (some co-written with MOI singer Ray Collins). To the unexperienced, songs like "Cheap Thrills," "Deseri," and "Jelly Roll Gum Drop" may sound like an average doo wop song

Repeated plays reveal a cynicism in deliberately banal lyrics and a few stylistic flourishes that break through the music's fourth wall. How Could I Be Such a Fool," "Any Way the Wind Blows," and "You Didn't Try to Call Me"-songs that appeared on Freak Out-are transformed into relatively straightforward tunes. Please note: this is the 1985 issue of the album, where Zappa had bassist Arthur Barrow and drummer Chad Wackerman re-record the rhythm tracks, except for "Stuff Up the Cracks," which is the original recording. Cruising With Ruben & The Jets The Mothers of Invention.
Frank Zappa created the fictional band. the band consisted of a bunch of teenagers that an old man (Uncle Meat) turned into "dog snout" people under the lead of singer Ruben Sano. The album itself belongs to the "No Commercial Potential" project. The other albums that belong to that project are "We're Only in it For the Money", the revised version of "Lumpy Gravy" and "Uncle Meat".
How Frank Zappa Returned to His Youth on ‘Cruising With Ruben and the Jets’. Certainly not the beloved doo-wop of Zappa’s teen years. He had dabbled with the music quite a bit before he became a star, both separately and alongside Mothers singer Ray Collins, who was convinced to hold off his inevitable departure from the fast-changing group long enough to help Zappa record this refreshingly straightforward collection of lovelorn pop ditties amid the continuing experimental nature dominating the concurrent Uncle Meat sessions. The results may have sounded somewhat archaic when released in the thick of rock’s Age of Aquarius (or, if you like, well ahead of the nostalgia.

NotesThis is an album of greasy love songs & cretin simplicity.
We made it because we really like this kind of music (just a bunch of old men with rock & roll clothes sitting around the studio, mumbling about the good old days).
Ten years from now you'll be sitting around with your friends someplace doing the same thing if there's anything left to sit on.
