On that album, Monroe recorded a number of traditional fiddle tunes he had often heard performed by Vandiver. After the Monroe Brothers disbanded in 1938, Bill Monroe formed The Kentuckians in Little Rock, Arkansas, but the group only lasted for three months. Bill had wanted "Old Hickory" to become one of the original members of his "Blue Grass Boys", however William Hardin had to decline.

This set contains all 40 songs that Bill Monroe recorded for Columbia, though controversially 16 of them are alternative versions that were unreleased prior to 1992. Although representing only a short period in the long career of Bill Monroe, his time with Columbia was a very important period. This is where bluegrass music began as a separate identifiable genre.
His catalog with the label is vast, but uneven. In its strategy of putting into the marketplace compilations at different price points, MCA issued a four-disc box set, The Music of Bill Monroe, in 1994 and a discount-priced collection, 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Bill Monroe, in 1999. The Very Best of Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys supersedes the label's now out-of-print 1991 album Country Music Hall of Fame as a single-disc, full-priced examination of his Decca/MCA years
