Spiral Scratch is an EP and the debut release by English punk rock band Buzzcocks. It was released on 29 January 1977. It is one of the earliest releases by a British punk band (preceded by The Damned's "New Rose" in October 1976, and both the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the . and the first two singles by The Vibrators in November 1976).
Spiral Scratch's hand-pressed, blurry black-and-white sleeve housed four tracks - each one a uniquely compelling experience, marrying raw, youthful zest with belligerent intelligence. The EP's release achieved several things at once. It opened up the independent scene, making . labels the natural springboard for aspiring musicians.
Spiral Scratch -the four-song debut EP on which Boredom appeared-was a revelation. British punk rock was brand new at that point: when Spiral Scratch was released on January 29, 1977, the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy in the . was barely two months old, the Damned, the Vibrators, and the Stranglers had some singles out, and that was it. All those bands were signed to itimate record labels. Meanwhile, the Buzzcocks scraped together the funds to have 1000 copies of Spiral Scratch pressed themselves, and called their otherwise nonexistent label New Hormones.
Buzzcocks – Spiral Scratch. Label: New Hormones – ORG-1. Reply Notify me 1 Helpful. I'm selling my '77 original, so have been checking the run-out details against those above - it's identical to 'Variation 3' above in every respect, but there is an extra digit stamped on each side
While it does sound pretty standard alongside the many similar albums that followed its release, Spiral Scratch really is timeless in its delivery. In typical 70’s punk format, the songs are fast, fun, and undoubtedly catchy, focusing on giving the listener a dose of quick and easy entertainment as opposed to lengthy, embellished soundscapes.
Buzzcocks’ first line-up split before they could record an album (Buzzcocks II became Top Of The Pops regulars, Devoto formed the equally influential Magazine), but they recorded the first truly independent 45, the Spiral Scratch EP, and a series of demos, some of which would be polished to a silver sheen on the superb Another Music In A Different Kitchen. Time’s Up remains a largely very good collection.
Buzzcocks - Spiral Scratch. It’s been 40 years since the Buzzcocks released the Spiral Scratch EP. Punk was still up for grabs and yet to be defined. The Sex Pistols were having their heyday and two art school students with a love of the Velvet Underground, changed their names and started a band. Buzz for "word on the street" and cock for mate.
Spiral Scratch is the kind of record it's easy to romanticise. It was recorded in relative obscurity during studio downtime by a then unknown Martin Hannett, funded by money borrowed from friends. That Spiral Scratch can be seen as something of a landmark isn't lost on Domino Records, who have just reissued the record on this, its 40th anniversary. The EP, as their liner notes read under the heading 'The Most Important Record Ever', "was more important than The Sex Pistols' 'Anarchy In The UK'. More important than The Damned's 'New Rose'
