The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale is the twenty-second studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on August 24, 1999 by Warner Bros. The album was submitted to Warner Bros. The album was recorded from 1985 through 1994. It was the last album to be released by Warner Bros.

The original 1985 version of Old Friends 4 Sale was included on a 1 May 1985 configuration of Parade. 5 Women was given to Joe Cocker for inclusion on his album Night Calls, which was released in 1992, and where the song featured as Five Women. Three of the tracks (The Rest Of My Life, My Little Pill and There Is Lonely, were originally recorded for the movie "I'll Do Anything" (My Little Pill and There Is Lonely were included on a planned soundtrack album, which was later abandoned).

From the sullen look on his face on the cover to the selection of material - all downbeat and mostly negative toned material - its clear that Prince was releasing these simply to fulfill his contract with Warner Bros.

Album · 1999 · 10 Songs. Such is the case with The Vault, a collection of previously unreleased cuts pulled together by Warner Bros. after Prince left the label in the mid-'90s. The stylistic consistency of the tunes is all the more striking when you realize they span almost a decade; while they run the gamut from slow-rolling romantic ballads to breathlessly fervid funky workouts, they almost all use a distinctly jazzy brand of R&B full of deceptively effortless-seeming swing and a loose, bluesy vibe.

Warner unveiled that collection, unimaginatively titled The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale, in the summer of 1999. Instead of an official release for several of Prince's legendary songs though, The Vault is a brief collection (under 40 minutes) of ten songs, recorded between 1985 and 1994 according to the liner notes - though they all feel like Graffiti Bridge (or maybe Symbol) outtakes. That's not a complaint, actually.

I listed to it over and over but he and his wonderful talents will be terribly missed. 8 people found this helpful. lots of guitars, horns and passion. If you appreciate excellent musicianship, you will love this. If you only appreciate Prince for his more commercial stuff, and feel that was the apex of his talent, please move on. This man's talent was so far beyond that as exhibited here.
