It is Thomas' fourth album and Redding's sixth and the final studio album before his death on December 10, 1967. Influenced by Marvin Gaye's duets, the album features ten covers of soul classics and the eleventh finishing song co-written by Redding. The album includes crossover hits "Tramp" and "Knock on Wood". Following Redding's death, the single "Lovey Dovey" was also released.

King & Queen, the last studio album Otis completed before his death, in December 1967, is an underrated record, perhaps because it was lighthearted in tone and was soon overshadowed by Otis’ sensational appearances with the Stax-Volt Tour in Europe, at Monterey Pop, and his tragic sudden passing. The two singers contrast beautifully: Otis is all gutteral, a growling bear-like alpha male, and Carla a sophisticated, sensual brainbox (she was studying for her English Masters at the time).

Producer Jim Stewart had the idea to produce a duet album with Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, as he thought it would help their musical careers' progress, and that rawness and sophistication would work well together

The idea for Otis Redding and Carla Thomas to team up for King & Queen came from the mind of producer Jim Stewart, who could only see it as a positive move for both artists’ careers and sensed that the blend of rawness and sophistication respectively possessed by the voices of Redding and Thomas would be a beautiful thing. Depending on who you believe, King & Queen either took three days or six days to record, but however long the sessions required, the resulting album featured 10 covers and a new number entitled Ooh Carla, Ooh Otis, which – believe it or not – was written specifically for the album by Redding and Al Bell.
