Carol Kaye (nee Smith, born March 24, 1935) is an American musician, who is one of the most prolific recorded bass guitarists in rock and pop music, playing on an estimated 10,000 recordings in a career spanning over 50 years. Kaye began playing guitar in her early teens and after some time as a guitar teacher, began to perform regularly on the Los Angeles jazz and big band circuit.
Ray Pizzi, Carol Kaye, and Mitch Holder Thumbs Up (1998) From Kaye’s opening bass line on Green Dolphin Street to Pizzi’s stirring sax melodies on Freefall, this live set, recorded in . dips, walks, and shimmies with a lounge-jazz feel from another era. Matthew Sweet In Reverse As Kaye’s first true rock session since the ’60s, this album says everything about why she has been in demand for so long. How to Play the Electric Bass became a trend-setting bible, and eventually led to a whole line of books and videos that Kaye continues to build on. It was a completely different mindset from the coffee-driven routine of playing long hours in the studio, and it may have had something to do with Kaye’s decision, in the early ’70s, to cut back on her freelance hours and commit to some more in-depth collaboration.
Carol Kaye - electric bass (mostly improvised). Tommy Morgan - harmonica. Mike Melvoin - organ, piano. This recording was never owned by Hal Blaine who illegally uses it for his own purposes without her permission. A Finnish tv-company YLE has produced a 52 minutes documentary called The First lady of the Bass about Carol. The producer of the doc is LA based cameraman Pekka Rautionmaa and executive producer Ari Ylä-Anttila at YLE Helsinki, Finland. The program will air Aug.

Check out Carol Kaye's gear and equipment including the 1970s Music Man HD-130 Stack, Fender Precision Bass, and Ibanez SRX-690. I’d been a Fender endorser since the late ’60s, but went to a Gibson Ripper bass when I stepped out to play live jazz again with Hampton Hawes in ’74. At first I was impressed with the Ripper’s easy neck and its sounds. Gibson took some publicity shots, and I was going to be their endorser, but they simply couldn’t get the bass to have the punchiness I liked. They also tried with the Grabber, but I kept changing my mind as to where to put the pickup, hence that bass came out with a sliding pickup. I finally just gave up and went back to Fender.
Carol Kaye is one of the most recorded bass players of all time, with 10,000 sessions and 40,000 songs under her belt, including a staggering list of hits for Ray Charles, The Righteous Brothers, Johnny Mathis, Nancy Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Glen Campbell, Lou Rawls, Jan & Dean, Henry Mancini, The Lettermen, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Monkees, The Buckinghams, Sonny & Cher, Andy Williams, Quincy Jones, Joe Cocker, Ike and Tina Turner, Mel Torme, Bobby Darin, Frank Zappa, Wayne Newton, Herb Alpert and even some Motown tracks cut in .
Electric Bass Guitar book. Beginning in 1969, she wrote her first of many bass tutoring books, "How To Play The Electric Bass" effectively changing the name of Fender Bass to Electric Bass and began teaching 100s of Electric Bass students, many of them now famous themselves. Her tutors are endorsed by such notables as Professor Joel Leach, 10-year winner of the Pacific Jazz Festival Awards with his famous Cal-State Northridge Jazz Bands, and Plas Johnson, jazz/blues studio sax legend ("Pink Panther").

NotesCame with an Electric Bass practice book "Electric Bass Lines"
This album contains practice material for all 47 Bass Lines in the book, including "How To Sight Read Boogaloo"...
This is the first of three LP's: all are identical except for colour: 'Electric Bass" (Green), "No.1" (Yellow) and "No. 2" (Pink). By No.2, Gwyn Publishing appears to be have been incorporated into Warner Bros Publications. There are Electric Bass practice books up to No.6; It is unconfirmed if these had accompanying LP releases or not; if Glyn Publications had been bought out and incorporated into WB Publishing then probably unlikely.
"The Electric Bass sounds better if it is a little sharp rather than a little flat or even exactly in tune.
Always double check your tuning harmonically on 5th and 7th frets". (Carol Kaye)
