Like "MacArthur Park," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was written by Jimmy Webb about a love affair he had with Suzy Horton, whom he began dating when they were high school students in Colton, California. She caused him considerable anguish when she ran off to Lake Tahoe to work as a dancer; it got worse when she married another guy, inspiring Webb to write "Worst That Could Happen," a hit for the Brooklyn Bridge in 1969. It took up virtually the whole side of an album, but I really liked i. "The whole talking blues thing at the beginning was like a novel - a major opus," he continued

In 1967 the song "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" won two Grammys in the categories Best Vocal Performance, Male and Best Contemporary Male Solo Vocal Performance References. Top Country Albums number-one album of the year 1968. Succeeded by Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell. v. t. e. Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

The inspiration for "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" originated in Webb's breakup with Susan Horton. They remained friends after her marriage to Bobby Ronstadt, a cousin of singer Linda Ronstadt Webb stated that the song was not intended to be geographically literal. If she "rises" at 6:00 . when he is in Phoenix, and she eats lunch at 12:30 . when he is in Albuquerque, it gives him six and one-half hours to make the 420-mile drive, an average of 65 mph. The drive from Albuquerque to Oklahoma is just 340 miles, giving her plenty of time to get home and go to sleep. Webb called the song a "succinct tale" with an "O. Henry-esque twist at the end, which consists merely of the guy saying, 'She didn't really think that I would go,' but he di.
