Sun Ra And His Myth Science Arkestra ‎– Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. Country: US. Released

Cosmic Tones functions as a kind of blueprint for the sort of large-scale jazz weirdness that would inform much of Sun-Ra's subsequent works, featuring the woozy reeds of And Otherness and the afro-jazz experiments of Thither And Yon. On Adventure Equation a space echo treatment on the recording which is reprised for the sax flurries on Voice Of Space making the whole experience even more disorientating than it already would b. Originally released in a sleeve with a Sun Ra doodle, the better known cover, designed by Richard Pedreguera, was in place by 1969.

In its lysergic abstractness, Cosmic Tones prefigures by a few years the outer dimensions of psychedelia (which was inspired by g chemicals), and foreshadows some of the wilder studio escapades of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The album-or at least its title-may have originated when Sun Ra's manager Alton Abraham arranged a performance for patients at a Chicago psychiatric facility. Recorded in 1963 but not released until 1967 on Sun Ra's Saturn label, Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy is one of the more notorious of the artist's early New York releases. It near-completely rejects existing notions of jazz in favor of conducted chaos, offering a template for the unknown. Therapeutic for some, electroshock for others.

The story goes that Sun Ra and his Arkestra performed at a Chicago psychiatric facility for the patients, and at one point a woman who hadn’t spoken or moved in years got out her wheelchair and walked over to the bandleader, asking him: Do you call that music? That woman isn’t the last to ask that question, and this reverb-heavy album (recorded in 1963 and released in 1967) seems only to fuel that accusation. The first two tracks were recorded in the band’s practice space and highlight different small groupings.
