1977" Album: 1977, released 2010 Style: Rap, hip-hop influence, autobiographical, origin story Countries: France (born), Chile (parents). Listen: "1977" is an autobiographical rap about Ana Tijoux’s birth, her childhood, and the start of her career. It is a catchy and poetic song. Listen to it at YouTube here.

Tijoux was born in France to a French mother and a Chilean father in political exile during Pinochet's dictatorship. After the return to democracy, the family moved to Chile. She found a home in the emerging hip-hop scene of Santiago and first started rhyming in French, then later in Spanish.

1977: The Remixes, Vol. 3. Artist: Ana Tijoux.

Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux's latest album, "1977," is titled for the year she was born and it plays like the diary of a young woman. An introspective lyricist with a low voice that makes the listener want to lean in closer, Tijoux has only her thoughts to reveal. But she does so with conviction, whether musing about happiness ("Humanidad"), laying down a heartbreak confessional ("Mar Adentro") or getting autobiographical on the standout title track.

Album · 2010 · 14 Songs. Having already earned street cred during her stint with the Latin rap collective Makiza, Ana Tijoux digs deep into her psyche on this breakthrough 2010 album, her second release as a solo artist. The Paris-reared daughter of Chilean exiles who escaped the Pinochet dictatorship, Tijoux explores themes of loss, loyalty, injustice, and identity here. The occasional French raps ( Oulala ) give the album a worldly sophistication, while the sparse, jazzy production throughout is a nod to ’90s-era New York hip-hop.
