Fats Waller Piano Solos (1929-1941). One of the most important of jazz pianists, Fats Waller blended the stride style of his early influence James P. Johnson with his own refined sense of melody and dynamics. Beneath all the comical vocalizing on his many combo sides, one often could overlook Waller's incredible facility at the keys. As adept as stride masters like Willie "The Lion" Smith but not quite as impressive as Art Tatum, Waller could have even done without such a masterful touch at the piano, considering his rich store of songs and Broadway shows like Hot Chocolates

These three-minute nougats of wordlesswonderment popped up between clusters of ensemble and vocal tracks during the LP era, adding significant depth to the RCA Victor Vintage series in particular. doubleLP (containing 33 selections) presented most of the master takes recorded between 1929 and1941, and a follow-up Bluebird double CD (40 selections) appeared in 1991 bearing the titleTurn on the Heat. If there were to be one Fats Waller album, or one jazz album,or one of a handful of sound recordings to speak for the world, this is it. It's that important, it'sthat beautiful, it's that essential.

If Fats Waller had lived to ripe old age, he might have been the consensus greatest jazz pianist instead of Tatum. He had all the technique, as evident on these recordings. His gentle nudging of melodies, especially his own, has a charm that on repeated listenings goes deep. On first hearing, you'll find them lovely, and on subsequent hearings you become simply enchanted. Waller had a reputation as a court jester, but when he sat down at the piano alone, he was intensely serious. This is a great composer composing variations on wonderful compositions. Fats Waller: piano solo on all tracks. Recorded in Camden (New Jersey), New York and London between 1927 and 1941. Total time: 159 mins.
