American conductor Leonard Bernstein made his first of three recordings of the Beethoven Ninth in 1964 with the New York Philharmonic, for Columbia Masterworks, with soloists Martina Arroyo (soprano), Regina Sarfaty (mezzo), Nicholas di Virgilio (tenor), Norman Scott (bass), and the Juilliard Chorus. It was later reissued on CD. Bernstein made his second recording of the piece with the Vienna Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon, in 1979. The Ninth Symphony influenced the forms that Anton Bruckner used for the movements of his symphonies. His Symphony No. 3 is in the same D-minor key as Beethoven's 9th and makes substantial use of thematic ideas from it. The colossal slow movement of Bruckner's Symphony No. 7, "as usual", takes the same A–B–A–B–A form as the 3rd movement of Beethoven's symphony and also uses some figuration from i. . 9 in D Minor 01. I. Feierlich, Misterioso (26:59) 02. An unfinished symphony conducted at the end of one's journey. This stunning and heartrending interpretation by Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic is a testament to complete immersion in ensemble perfection.
Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 has been added to your Cart. But I digress; this is a surprisingly excellent performance of Bruckner's Ninth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, far better than the New York Philharmonic recording decades earlier. The work is certainly the most emotionally charged (thus Mahler-like) of all the Bruckner symphonies, a characteristic Bernstein certainly specialized. It is also reminiscent of Mahler's equally apocalyptic Ninth Symphony. Both evoke intense anxiety in the beginning movement, and end with a peaceful farewell to the world, but not before a terrifying climax. In the first movement, Bernstein and his orchestra play with utmost terror.
What's most impressive about these recordings of well over 100 symphonies made between 1953 and 1976, almost all of which feature the New York Philharmonic, is the scope and depth of Bernstein's repertoire. The complete symphonic works of many of the great symphonists are here, including Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Sibelius. In addition to less-than-complete sets of symphonies by other major composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich, Bernstein ventures into more obscure repertoire. 5. 1. Lento - Allegro non troppo.
